The Music Channel's 100 Greatest Music Videos (2012)

  1. "Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen (1975, directed by Bruce Gowers); This is truly the video that brought music video to the mainstream and launched hard rock quartet Queen to the video circuit.
  2. "Thriller" - Michael Jackson (1983, directed by John Landis); This music video helped to popularise MTV and was a fitting end to the King of Pop's best-selling Thriller album.
  3. "Like a Prayer" - Madonna (1989, directed by Mary Lambert); This music video caused controversy and the Pepsi advert containing the song was later withdrawn.
  4. "Under the Bridge" - Red Hot Chili Peppers (1992, directed by Gus Van Sant); This music video launched the Red Hot Chili Peppers to adult contemporary stations followed by the international success of the breakthrough album Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
  5. "Imagine" - John Lennon (1971, directed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono); This was one of the prototypical music videos of the 1970s.
  6. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana (1991, directed by Samuel Bayer); This video brought hardcore punk-influenced alternative rock subgenre grunge to the mainstream with the help of MTV.
  7. "Subterrean Homesick Blues" - Bob Dylan (1965, directed by D. A. Pennebaker); This video was known for its cardswitching scene and was a prototype for the famous one shot video.
  8. "Song 2" - Blur (1997, directed by Sophie Muller); This video launched Blur's transistion from a power pop-influenced britpop band to an indie rock band with the grunge song "Song 2", which ironically lasted 2 minutes and 2 seconds.
  9. "My Immortal" - Evanescence (2003, directed by David Mouldy); This black-and-white music video was a complete departure from the gothic pop band's previous two videos to a dramatic video.
  10. "Ignorance" - Paramore (2009, directed by Honey); This video helped pop punk rockers Paramore to the mainstream.
  11. "Welcome to the Black Parade" - My Chemical Romance (2006, directed by Samuel Bayer); This video launched the emotional hardcore genre to the mainstream.
  12. "Special K" - Placebo (2001, directed by Howard Greenhalgh); This video was inspired by the film Fantastic Voyage.
  13. "Back for Good" - Take That (1995, directed by Vaughan Arnell); This video welcomed Take That to the American audience. Despite being a US one-hit wonder, the pop band has continued to sell records.
  14. "My Favourite Game" - The Cardigans (1998, directed by Jonas Akerlund); This video caused controversy which led director Jonas Akerlund to do four endings and an alternative cut of the video. The four endings shows lead singer Nina Persson doing a crucifix on top of her car, causing a collision. The first ending shows her dead on the floor, the second ending shows her getting knocked out unconscious by a pebble in her car while trying to move, the third ending shows her leaving the scene and the fourth ending shows her decapitated.
  15. "It's My Life" - Bon Jovi (2000, directed by Wayne Isham); This video introduced the ex-pop metal band to younger audiences.
  16. "Without Me" - Eninem (2002, directed by Joseph Kahn); This video is known for parodying Elvis Presley, E!, The Real World and various more plus Eninem plays Robin in the music video alongside with his mentor and friend Dr. Dre trying to tell a ten-year-old boy that his CD The Eninem Show has explicit lyrics.
  17. "Livin' on a Prayer" - Bon Jovi (1986, directed by Wayne Isham); This video put Bon Jovi to the map of music.
  18. "Right Now" - Van Halen (1992, directed by Mark Fenske); Despite Sammy Hagar's opposition of the video, this video won the Holy Grail of music video, the MTV Video Music Awards for Video of the Year.
