American Idol synopsis

American Idol started out as a project by 19 Entertainment founder and Spice Girls manager and creator Simon Fuller in 2001 after the success of Pop Idol. Many American networks such as ABC, CBS and NBC rejected the project until Fox TV bought the rights. It was originally going to be called Pop Idol USA, but due to legal issues with Popstars it was renamed American Idol. The show was taped in spring 2002 and began on June 11, 2002 until September 4, 2002. The show's pilot became a success and American Idol was born. The judging panel was Simon Cowell, the judge of Pop Idol and manager of various singers, Randy Jackson, former Journey bass guitarist and music producer and Paula Abdul, semi-retired popstar. Originally, there was supposed to have a fourth judge named Ted Ramon Stryker, a disc jockey from the radio station KROQ, but he left before the auditions began. It was hosted by radio presenter Ryan Seacrest and comedian Brian Dunkleman. The show's finale led to Kelly Clarkson's victory and had a contract for RCA. The finalists also had recording contracts, but was dropped. The show was renewed for three more seasons. The show later spanned a film called From Justin to Kelly, but the film became a commercial flop.

The second season was taped on late 2002 and aired on January 21, 2003 until May 23, 2003. All judges remained in the series and was originally going to have a fourth judge. award-winning rapper Angie Martinez, but she left after four days after filming of the auditions began. Brian Dunkleman quit the show before the second season began filming which led Ryan Seacrest as the sole host though Dunkleman was going to replaced by ex-contestant Kristin Holt, however she became the correspondent for the series. The season caused some controversy when finalist Corey Clark was disqualified because he did not tell the judges he was arrested. Ruben Studdard was crowned the winner of the second season.

The third season was taped on Summer 2003 and aired on January 19, 2004 until May 26, 2004. The season introduced Calfornian university student William Hung when he sang "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin. He did not go through to the Hollywood round. It became a viral hit which led him to be signed to Koch Records (now E1 Music). Fantasia Barrino was crowned the winner of the third season. The fourth season was taped on Summer 2004 and aired on January 18, 2005 until May 25, 2005. The season introduced the age limit to up to 28 and the guest judge panel and was the last season on SDTV (standard definition). Carrie Underwood was crowned the winner of the fourth season and later became the top-selling American Idol artist to date. The fifth season had two changes: The logo changed and it broadcasted in HDTV. It also introduced the prediction website DialIdol, which allows users to vote for the contestants.
